What is a brake shoe? What is its purpose?

Nov 03, 2025

Brake shoe (also known as locomotive brake shoe) is a crucial component in the braking system of railway locomotives and vehicles. It is typically made of cast iron or synthetic materials and has a shoe-like structure. It comes into direct contact with the wheel tread and converts kinetic energy into thermal energy through friction, thereby achieving train deceleration or stopping.

Main functions and features:

Braking action: During braking, the brake shoe tightly grips the wheel tread, generating sliding friction that forces the wheel to stop rotating;

Energy conversion: Convert the tremendous kinetic energy of the train into thermal energy dissipation through friction;

Safety guarantee: Its performance directly affects the braking effect. Excessive wear may lead to brake failure, requiring regular replacement;

High temperature resistance: High-quality brake shoes can operate stably at a high temperature of 377℃ and possess characteristics such as wear resistance and low noise.

Maintenance and replacement

Maintenance and replacement:

When replacing, it is necessary to close the cut-off cock, exhaust the residual air, and follow the standardized steps;

The brake shoe clearance needs to be precisely adjusted (such as 7±1mm) to avoid brake delay or excessive wear;

Abnormal burning smell or rapid wear may stem from uneven clearances or damaged components, necessitating timely investigation and rectification.

Technological development:

Traditional brake shoe braking may affect the lifespan of wheels, and modern trains often incorporate disc braking technology to enhance efficiency. For instance, disc braking reduces direct wear on wheels by clamping the brake disc on the axle side with a caliper.
