What is the difference between heavy-duty brake pads and regular brake pads?

Mar 08, 2026

There are significant differences between heavy-duty brake pads and regular brake pads in multiple key dimensions, as detailed below:

1. Material and structural differences

Wear resistance enhancement

The heavy-duty brake pads are made of high-density metal-ceramic composite materials, with a high temperature resistance of over 600℃, while ordinary brake pads are mostly made of semi-metallic materials, with a temperature resistance of about 400℃;

Different thickness standards

The initial thickness of brake pads for heavy-duty vehicles is typically 12mm (compared to 10mm for passenger cars), and they need to be replaced when worn down to 6mm, which is much earlier than for passenger cars (4mm).

II. Braking performance characteristics

Braking torque requirement

Heavy-duty brake pads need to withstand greater inertial forces (for example, the braking force of a 10-ton truck during sudden braking can be up to three times that of an ordinary passenger car), so the friction coefficient is designed to be higher;

Heat dissipation structure optimization

High-end heavy-duty brake pads often incorporate cooling slots or ventilation structures to prevent thermal degradation caused by continuous braking (the efficiency of ordinary brake pads may decrease by 30% after continuous braking).

III. Applicable Scenarios and Maintenance

System adaptability

Trucks often adopt pneumatic braking systems, requiring brake pads to match large-sized brake drums; while hydraulic systems in passenger cars are adapted to small disc brake pads;

Difference in replacement cycle

The lifespan of brake pads for heavy-duty vehicles is typically 30,000 to 50,000 kilometers (which can be shortened to 20,000 kilometers in case of frequent emergency braking), while high-quality ceramic brake pads for passenger cars can last up to 80,000 kilometers.
