What's the difference between heavy-duty brake pads and ordinary brake pads?

Aug 19, 2026

The core differences between heavy-duty brake pads and ordinary brake pads are concentrated in four aspects: applicable scenes, multiple regions of materials, structural design and performance emphasis. The specific differences are as follows:

Different applicable models

Heavy-duty brake pads are specially designed for commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses and engineering vehicles, and are suitable for heavy-duty and high-frequency braking conditions of such vehicles; Ordinary brake pads are aimed at passenger cars such as cars, SUVs and MPVs to meet the light load demand of daily transportation.

Different core materials

Heavy-duty brake pads are mainly made of ceramic composite materials and metal-based friction materials with high wear resistance (mainly based on actual reports), and some components such as copper and graphite will be added to enhance the properties of high temperature resistance (mainly based on actual reports) and wear resistance (mainly based on actual reports); Ordinary brake pads are mostly made of semi-metallic materials or organic (mainly based on actual reports) composite materials, with more emphasis on silence and braking smoothness.

Different structural designs

The friction surface of heavy-duty brake pads is larger and thicker, and some products will also be designed with cooling grooves or holes to cooperate with commercial vehicle high-thrust brake calipers to improve heat dissipation efficiency; Ordinary brake pads have more compact structure, smaller friction surface area and thickness, and are suitable for small brake calipers of passenger cars.

Different performance emphasis

Heavy-duty brake pads have high friction coefficient and strong high-temperature stability, and are not prone to thermal recession during heavy-load continuous braking. The wear resistance (mainly based on actual reports) is 2-3 times that of ordinary brake pads, giving priority to protecting braking force and service life, and having high tolerance for noise and dust. Ordinary brake pads have moderate friction coefficient, fast braking response at low temperature, and pay more attention to braking smoothness, mute effect and low dust characteristics to improve driving comfort, but thermal attenuation is easy to occur in high temperature environment.

The replacement cycle is different

The replacement cycle of heavy-duty brake pads is greatly influenced by the load and working conditions, and the wear is fast under heavy-duty and short-distance working conditions, and the replacement cycle may be shorter than that of ordinary brake pads; The cycle is longer under standard load long-distance working condition. The replacement cycle of ordinary brake pads is relatively stable, and the replacement of family cars is usually 30,000-60,000 kilometers, which is mainly related to urban congestion and sudden braking frequency.
